Bunkers

A great deal of discussion was held in respect to the bunkers. There is a great deal of inconsistency in the design of bunkers and this does not give Kooringal GC a clear "image" within the golfing fraternity. The common problem is that bunkers or bunker sand cannot be seen and that shape presentation (design) is so varied.

The Kooringal GC Bunker style

The Kooringal Bunker is to be defined as grassing the upper levels of the face where applicable and leaving a firm "splash" of sand along the sight line / high point of bunker so as to allow visual recognition from both tee (where applicable) and fairway. The golf ball should roll off the face and settle on the base of the bunker.

The suggested style would be of a modified "classic" look with a rolling lip and half sand / half grass face. This style will show enough sand when viewed from the fairway but is still maintainable by the course staff. These bunkers can dramatically improve the appearance of the Course and can withstand "dating" over time.

All bunkers are to be properly drained and have appropriate "walk in / out" access points which are both safe and complement the design character.

When grassing on selected areas of faces occurs the bunker may require reshaping at points so as to facilitate the use of motorized bunker rakes and ensure ease of maintenance.

Bunker faces that remain as "sand" to be actually clay face with a smattering of sand over so that the ball landing on such will move to the base of the bunker for play. Outside edges of bunkers and faces should be raked with the "flat" side of a rake so as to maintain a smooth firm surface which encourages golf balls back into the bottom base of the bunker which is raked to provide a sand bed which accepts no more than 45% of a golf ball.
