Extreme Heat Policy

Purpose

This procedure sets out guidelines for Kooringal Golf Club to advise its Members, guests and visitors of its Duty of Care in relation to Members and other Golfers who choose to play Golf on hot, high temperature and humid days.

Scope

All Members, guests, visitors and other persons who play Golf at Kooringal Golf Club (the Club) Definitions Heat Illness covers a range of medical conditions that arise when the body is unable to properly cope with heat and or humidity, these conditions include:

  • Heat stroke: A life threatening condition that requires immediate first aid and medical treatment.
  • Fainting due to the heat.
  • Heat cramps.
  • Heat exhaustion.
  • Heat fatigue.
  • Skin rashes - prickly heat.
  • The worsening of a pre-existing medical condition.

The signs and symptoms of heat related illnesses can be any of these:

  • Feeling sick.
  • Nausea.
  • Dizziness.
  • Weakness.
  • Clumsiness.
  • Collapse.
  • Convulsions.
  • Sweaty hands.
  • Falls and trips.
  • Mental and physical tiredness.

Heat Discomfort is not a medical condition but describes how most people feel (discomfort) when it is hot.

Temperature is the degree or intensity of heat of the body or atmosphere.

Rest Breaks are the periods of time away from the activity taken in the shade or cool place.

Cool Drinks are non-alcoholic drinks that have a cooling affect when being consumed.

Procedure

There are a number of considerations that can be taken into account by the Clubs Golf Professional, golf shop employees and employees of Kooringal Golf Club to reduce and prevent the onset of heat related problems with Members and golfers , these include but are not limited to:

  • An up to date weather forecast.
  • The predicted weather forecasts over the next four to eight hours.
  • The provision of Cool shaded areas (Clubhouse) and first aid assistance made available to Members and golfers who suffer the effects of heat related activities.

Should the person assessing the situation on behalf of the Club believe they should advise the Member or golfer accordingly for their own health and safety, they should do so in the most tactful and diplomatic way possible, remembering that the ultimate responsibility is that of the Member or golfer.

Responsibilities

The Club has a Duty of Care to advise a Member or golfer as to the weather conditions and the precautions that should be taken when playing golf in hot humid weather conditions.

The ultimate responsibility for their own health and welfare lies with the Member or golfer who decides to play golf in hot humid weather conditions.

The Clubs Committee, Chief Executive Officer has the responsibility for the implementation and the management of this procedure.

The assessment of extreme hot weather will be conducted by the General Manager or in his absence the club professional or their representatives.

Player Discretion

During Kooringal Golf Club competition any member or guest may withdraw either before or during the event due to hot weather conditions.
